Rhodes travel story

We organized the stay on the island of Rhodes for the late spring period among the most beautiful to visit the Greek islands. The days are long and the sun is hot and the temperatures are still myths also the vegetation is quite lush before being burned by the summer that here is always very hot.

The support base for the whole period was the Kresten Palace Hotel in Kallithea on the north-eastern coast not far from the city of Rhodes. The choice was motivated by an economic opportunity rather than a comparison punctual with other structures or proposals from Hotels. The hotel presents itself as a classic big village with many rooms arranged on a long face parallel to the sea, from which it is also just a few hundred meters, for which a half of the rooms have a beautiful view of the sea while the other half he inevitably a view little interesting on the road. The property is well maintained, has a swimming pool large and pleasant that represents the heart of the life of people who stay at this hotel because the beach is a tiny sand surrounded by rocks in addition to a small cove with consequent difficult bathing. The few seats available (deckchairs and umbrellas of the hotel) are taken by assault from early in the morning. The quality of service, meals and entertainment you can define normal even if the food offered are a bit repetitive and cleaning service in the rooms is not of the best.
The Rhodes island is among the largest of the variegated archipelago in the Aegean Sea, has a road network good not too busy. The rental of a car is required if you want to deepen the knowledge of this island, just three days to turn it all and visit the main places of interest.. For its strategic position, the island has lived in different times by the Greeks to the Romans, the Byzantines to the Knights of St John, the Turks to Italians. All this has left signs more or less evident in architecture, in monuments and in the culture of this place.

The Rhodes city is the heart of the business and tourist center of the island and is often invaded by tourists that descend from the large cruise ships sailing the Mediterranean Sea. Its historic center, which UNESCO has written in the World Heritage of Humanity, develops around the mighty walls fundamental element of defense in times past. Strolling among the various alleys you can grasp the reality of the medieval city that, in part, is still present even if often damaged by the presence of all kinds of shops, bars and restaurants for tourists. The passage of populations and different dominations you note from the surrounding walls of the Byzantine era, then reinforced and expanded by the Knights, from the palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of St John (can be visited only in part), by the presence of minarets, mosques and nineteenth-century towers. Even the Italians have left traces of their short passage (1912-43) with many works and architectures as the Governor Palace, today seat of the Prefecture, the great tree of Roses, today hotel and casino, the city hall, the National Theater, the church of S. Francis, and other buildings.
The Rhodes islanddevelops with an orientation indicatively north-south thus presenting the two coasts, an oriental more secure and with sea more quiet where there are many beaches of various kinds, sandy, rocky or pebble and a west coast more jagged, more beaten by the winds of the sea storms, with reduced settlements and less attractive for tourists. The majority of tourist centers and of the most famous locality are in the stretch north of the east coast between the city of Rhodes and Lindos. Here we find Kelithea with the large hotels of the area Beach, the lively Faliraki, mostly known by young people for the nightlife is more intense than that of the island, the areas of Kolimbia, where you will find several large villages located on the bay that bears the same name, then follow other beaches and resorts such as S. Maria Tsamplika until you get to Lindos.

The latter is the second city of the island from flavor all Greek, low houses all white, blue doors or brown, narrow alleys and an acropolis with a fortress of the Knights of St John placed on a high rocky spur that dominates the city. In fact here everything is converted to tourism and its narrow and characteristic streets are now filled with all kinds of shops, restaurants, tavernas, etc. Lindos is a location very well known thanks to the presence of some large villages of known tour operator in Europe that are found in its bays located to the north of the town. In the stretch of coast from Rhodes to Lindos are, in my opinion, some locations that are among the most beautiful and characteristic of this island. To report the Ladiko bay, also known with the name of the bay of Anthony Queen ; it is a small bay leaned on a mountain and closed almost completely, has a narrow passage from the open sea with a small beach pebbles. The setting, the colors of the sea and the surrounding rocks give extraordinary beauty so that the famous american actor fell in love with it at the time when he went to Rhodes to shoot the film "The guns of Navarone". Another bay similar and equally beautiful is that of S. Stefano placed immediately after the Lindos, visible and accessible from the main road that leads toward the south. Also in this case an angle of extreme beauty with waters from the amazing color, rocky coast dominated by Mount from the Acropolis of Lindos. Here, it says, he disembarked Saint Paul when he reached the island to evangelize it. Other places worth mentioning is the small town of Caraki where there is nothing extraordinary if not the simplicity of the people and the country. This is little houses that extend along a bay, where tranquillity reigns among the houses of the fishermen, fishing boats, the simple structures of accommodation or food & beverage, all in a climate where time flows slowly without haste and people, including the few tourists, we grant you a relaxing life and without stress.

The stretch of coast to the south of Lindos is less frequented and developed but deserves to be visited. We find the coastal towns of Kiotari and Plimiri, two small countries simple fishermen and going slightly in the hinterland you can reach the countries of Gennadio Lachania. Here the rhythms are quiet and silence reigns supreme. The homes are white with their doors/gates blue or brown, the alleys are tight and clean as if you were waiting for someone. Beautiful spots of color round off, the Bouganville emerge here and in the narrow streets, or are placed to decorate the inputs of the houses or internal pretty flower garden. In the extreme south is located an island/peninsula of Prassonissi, peninsula with the low tide, island with the high tide. Here the winds blowing always impetuous and the sea is always moved, a paradise for lovers of kitesurfing zipping numerous in the two bays one left and the other to the right of the promontory.

Inside the island deserves to organize an excursion on monte Fil√®rimos near Ialyssos (zone north) where you will find an archaeological park located on its top impervious, monte that, thanks to its strategic position, turns out to be an excellent observation point of a long stretch of the north coast. Many were the settlements of this park that have succeeded one another in the course of the centuries, among the best preserved and restored, are those of the Knights. The site, populated by an incredible number of peacocks, reconstructs a typical fortress with church, cloisters, residences, forts, etc.  Famous is also the valley of the butterflies, a narrow valley internal Pataloudes (zone north of the island) where, in the month of May, you play a multitude of butterflies thus being able to walk in the park, formed in the narrow valley, surrounded by thousands of these insects. In the rest of the year the park has no aspects of particular interest.
